Cultus Lake Flower Festival | Fraser Valley Things to Do
Living near the mountains, I get to see my fair share of wildflowers during my walks near my house. Watching the honey bees fly from petal to petal just doing their thing is always one of the highlights of summer for me – so you could say I was really in my element when I discovered the Cultus Lake Flower Festival in Yarrow earlier this month.
While my one-or-two types of wildflowers on my walks are lovely, the Cultus Lake Flower Festival easily has it beat with thousands of flowers and rows and rows of colourful blooms. Lavender, zinnias, dahlias and sunflowers are just a few of the flowers you’ll find here, but what I love the most is how casual everything feels as you are making your way through the fields.
I will be the first to admit that flower festivals can sometimes feel a little ummmm… pretentious. With the perfect rows and the perfect colour separation, it can sometimes feel a little too planned. The best part about Cultus Lake Flower Festival though, is that it feels like you’ve just stepped into the most magical meadow. It’s somehow exactly what you would imagine a true wildflower field to be, but like nothing you’ve ever seen before.
The Family Behind It All
Full of energy and passion for the flower fest, you can usually find the flower man himself, Jesse Wegenest out in the fields tending to flowers, welcoming guests and chatting about how the festival has grown and changed over the last 3 years. These blooms are a labour of love for him, as he does most of the seeding, growing and tending himself, a task that proved to be a little more challenging with the unseasonably warm summer that we’ve had so far! I know the Wegenast family is so appreciative of all of the love that the Cultus Lake Flower Festival has received this year, but I think it is all of us that should be so appreciative for them and the beautiful and serene space they’ve created!
Tickets are purchased in time slots, which prevents the fields from getting overcrowded. If you are going primarily for photos, try to snag a spot between 6:00pm – 8:00pm, but the fields are truly beautiful any time of the day! This year, they are also hosting Grow and Gather Bouquet Workshops as well as Yoga in the Flowers classes. I’ll actually be at the yoga class coming up on August 7th – let me know if I’ll see you there!
Oh, and if you get a chance, remember to stop and watch those big beautiful bees doing their thing as they buzz between the flowers. šø
